- Jose Mourinho says Manchester United were denied two good penalties
- Claudio Bravo's challenge on Wayne Rooney should have been a red card
- Nicolas Otamendi was also involved in what seemed a hand ball in the box

Jose
Mourinho accused referee Mark Clattenburg of denying Manchester United
two clear penalties as he suffered his first defeat of the season in the
Old Trafford derby.
Mourinho
was adamant that Clattenburg should have sent off Claudio Bravo and
awarded United a spot-kick after Manchester City's new goalkeeper lunged
into a challenge with Wayne Rooney in the second half shortly before
the official rejected United's claims for handball against Nicolas
Otamendi.
'We were punished by Mark with his bad decisions in the second half,' said Mourinho.

Claudio Bravo caught Wayne Rooney as he was trying to clear a ball in the penalty area
'I
know the rules of the game. It's obvious that it's a penalty and a red
card for Bravo. If it's outside the box, it's a direct free kick and a
red card.
‘If
one of my players does that in the middle of the park it’s a red card
and a free kick. In the box it is more difficult to give and he didn’t
want to give it.
'Inside the box it has to be the same. Even the best referees can make mistakes, and he made a big one.
'It's a big possibility of 2-2 with a long time to go, and we're talking about a completely different story.
'The
second penalty is Otamendi's handball. Some of you will say it's not a
penalty. I say 100 per cent. Otamendi tries to stop the cross in the
face of the goal, but the cross comes behind him. He knows and he brings
the second arm back. Clear penalty.'

United
were outclassed in the first half and Mourinho admitted that he got his
tactics wrong after changing a winning team by starting with Henrikh
Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard. Both played poorly and were replaced at
half-time.
'I'm
disappointed with some really poor individual performances,' added the
United boss. 'Because of the characteristics of the game I thought we
could hurt them playing with some individuals with some qualities. They
didn't give me what I want. Their fault or my fault? It's always my
fault because it's my choice.
'I
didn't change it after 20 minutes because I don't want to destroy the
players. I didn't want to make three changes at half-time because that
would have been a big risk.
'It
wasn't just about them, it was much more than Miki and Jesse. Other
players were not also playing really well. I don't like to single out
players but even our central defenders lost easy balls with bad passes.

'What
I said at half-time I have told them in the last three days. At
half-time I told them, 'for some of you, it looks like you are trying to
do what I told you not to do'.
'Some
of the boys felt the dimension of the game – everything around the
derby, United versus Man City, the focus, the attention. Some of the
guys felt it. It's about how the individual reacts to the dimension of
the occasion.
'In
the first half it was their half and they got what they deserved. In
the second half we were the best team and didn't get what we deserved.
'That's football, and mistakes from the referee are football too.'
Graeme Souness said he was certain the Bravo challenge should have been a sending off
The
pundits on hand for Sky Sports' TV coverage were split on the Otamendi
handball controversy, with Graeme Souness agreeing with Mourinho and
Thierry Henry lining up with Mark Clattenburg, but they were unanimous
when it came to Bravo's foul.
'He's
shown his studs, he's come out, he's left the ground...he risks getting
a real bad one, if not breaking the leg of Wayne Rooney,' said
Souness.
'That was a sending off when I played!' he added.
Bravo led with his studs into the challenge - which ought to have earned him a red card
'The
referees told us about taking both feet off the ground, about showing
your studs. It doesn't matter where you are on the pitch - that's a red
and a penalty,' said Henry.
The former Arsenal and Barcelona man also said he couldn't understand Manchester United's slow start.
'It was embarrassing. It didn't look like a derby for the first 36 minutes,' he said.
Thierry Henry criticised United's low-energy start to the match, calling it 'embarrassing'
Jamie Carragher said Kevin De Bruyne could become an all-time Premier League great
City came in for praise from both pundits.
'The team that played the real football today were City', said Souness.
'I
said at the beginning of the season I thought City would edge it, and
when they get their act together - play well in the first half and the
second half, get the bodies back that they are missing - be careful.'
Analyst Jamie Carragher didn't hold back on compliments for City's man of the match De Bruyne.
'He
looked like he was on the verge of being one of the players of the
Premier league last year. I think looking at him this season, he's going
to be very difficult to stop.
'Over
the next four or five years, if he produces on a regular basis what we
saw today, I think there's a great chance we'll be talking about him as
one of the great players in Premier League history', Carragher said.
